Because, for me (I'm not sure if it's the same for other authors), the smallest and most random of things can be the spark inspiration for a story idea, chapter or character. I could be sat in a lecture, trying to decipher the handwriting on the board when a completely unrelated story idea will just appear in my head. That's when I make a mad scramble for my Idea Book and jot it down before going back to my work.
I get inspiration from lots of random places. In the frozen food section of the supermarket. In the doctor's surgery waiting for a blood test. One of the stranger places was my younger brother's sports day, which is when the idea of Thief Underground was born!
Mine is stuffed with random post it notes, with ideas scribbled in the margins when random ideas link up, written with whatever instrument is closest to hand be this pen, pencil, felt tip or sometimes even a highlighter. It's perhaps the messiest note book that anyone has ever seen. But, it works for me, and that's what's important.
